This is a scam - doubled in price before ever leaving the US
(Dec 20th 2019) I was initially quoted a low price of $1,595 for 60CF, and paid $250 deposit. When I did a final inventory, it actually came to 120CF and I added a small table to the shipment. They requoted $2,995 because of the ‘additional volume, and furniture moves are priced differently’. I should have known better, but I proceeded with the new price. They failed to pick up on the day arranged, and then failed to pick up on the re-arranged date – two days later. Eventually two weeks later they picked up the boxes. As other people have reported, payment terms on the contrat were 7 days before the shipment was due at port – but when they sent the invoice it was payable immediately (BEFORE a shipping date was arranged). Also, they had calculated the volume at 140CF, and are charging an additional $524 for the extra 20CF, with an additional $75 if I pay after 7 days for an ‘expedited Bill of Lading’. By now – I’m slow at the uptake – I see the scam and ask to pick up the goods from their warehouse, and pay for services rendered to date (pickup and transport to their warehouse, and (presumably) paletting – but actually now I’m not sure. They came back with a quote of $2,700!!!! (this is before the goods have even left the country).
I’m trying to work out what to do to get my stuff back –
(update July 6th 2020) In February I was told that if I wanted to ever see my stuff, I needed to remove the unfavorable review, and provide a favorable one...I'm now reposting the unfavorable one because my shipment finally (unbelievably) arrived!!!! Since my initial review, I tried to negotiate with Ayal Shany (VP of Operations) to use an escrow service to pay their fee and have the shipment picked up by another shipping company. That tactic didn't work, and we eventually paid the full $3,700 by check, but then proceeded to get nothing but run-around from Mr. Shany (including the demand to remove the above review).
A month or so later (by this time we had completely given up hope of seeing any of our possessions again), all of a sudden Vernon Manalo, an International Move Coordinator from Baron who we hadn't been in contact with before, responded to an email we sent to Mr. Shany, saying our shipment was on it's way.... (but no Bill of Lading or any other proof was ever given), ..then suddenly, after 8 months....it's here! I still can't figure out the scam (assuming there was one - it certainly felt like it). Since Vernon came on the scene things got a WHOLE lot better - though still very uncommunicative. Doing a LinkedIn search, it appears that Ayal Shany left Baron/Johnson in April, which is around the time that things started to go well for us, so it's possible it was a case of a bad apple.
Postscript: Everything arrived (nothing was tampered with or stolen). The 'only' issue was with the s.mall antique table - it had two of its legs broken in half. How they managed to do that, I really don't know. We are trying to claim on the insurance, but to be honest we're just grateful to see our wedding photos again!
TL;DR: Even if you take Ayal Shany and his wife Helen out of the equation, there are serious issues with this company. Avoid
