I moved from Switzerland to New York which involved 2 moving companies that were supposed to work together. Initially, the Swiss company was very responsive and proactive. But on the moving day problems started. In addition to arriving very late, I had clearly stipulated the limit I wanted to pay for my goods and the limit of cubic meters. I was told the lead mover would make sure I would be informed if the volume was over the limit. The lead mover clearly said there was plenty of space for me to add my bike and some other belongings which I would have given away if the volume was too much. Unfortunately I received an additional bill for extra volume which was very unexpected and unfair. Furthermore, they would not negotiate the extra charge. I was also told to reserve a parking space from the city which I did and had to pay for but it was not necessary. Again, no apology or negotiation on the charge.
I was told my goods would be shipped right away but instead they were shipped a month later, I was not made aware of the dely. They claimed it was because I didn`t submit all the paperwork but I was never told they didn`t have all the documents.
I had to continue to follow up and was not informed that once my goods arrived at customs in NY they would be moved to another warehouse where I would need to continue to wait until they decided it was time to deliver them. In addition, I was shocked to receive a very large customs processing fee that I was never informed of which was 20% of the overall move cost!!!!
Instead of my move taking 1 month as I was told, the move took 3 months. If I had known this I would have prepared much differently but instead had to buy a lot of additional goods and clothing in order to live because it turned to Winter in NY.
When my goods arrived my bike was crushed and was not packed properly. Either were some very fragile items but thankfully they weren`t damaged.
Even though I paid for the insurance I was only reimbursed what they calculated was the repair cost and not the value of the bike I actually insured!
All in all it was a very frustrating experience that involved a lot more money than anticipated or I was informed of. I had no recourse because if I didn`t pay I wouldn`t receive my belongings. The move cost me 30% more than I was informed of. Moving overseas is stressful as it is and unfortunately the movers added significantly to that stress. No matter how prepared and thorough I thought I was, I was not prepared for the lack of professionalism, disrespect, the significant stress and additional cost I would incur. A huge disappointment.
